Maybe thats a little too drastic a title, but I’ve been there.

What is that your saying? Am I trying to say Search Engines are bad for business?

Nope, not even close. My problem with search engines occurred when I started to rely on that sweet traffic, a little too much. I worked my butt off optimizing my sites, trying to make them perfect, to be snatched up by the search engines gods. I even went to far as to hire a SEO guru, to make sure I’d done everything right.

It worked, it worked really well. Many of my keywords showing up not only in the top 10 of google, but many in the top five. The sales were good, I was over joyed with my new wealth.

Till it bottomed out far too soon. The same thing that would happen to me many times, over the years. I’m not complaining, it made me money.

Don’t get me wrong, every one should do their best to optimize their websites for all the search engines, it’s good business sense and a real basic for on-line success. Just take my word for it, don’t rely too heavy on just engine traffic.

The good news is that the traffic does come back from time to time. You just can’t set your watch to it.

You should always be working on new avenues of traffic, other sources, just in case the well dries up. In reality, the mere action of adding new traffic sources could help you in the search engines, links have always been a major factor in ranks and probably always will be. Now get back to work!
