Link Building 101 - Basics
No one can dispute, search engines base much of a sites ranking on the given sites linkbacks. If you don’t know what a linkbank is, it is simply a link or hyperlink on another site that is linked or hyperlinked to your site. Clear as mud?
Another website on the Internet puts a link on one of their webpages that links to one of your webpages.
One thing to remember, every linkback is not the same. It’s really quite simple, the more popular the site, the better quality that linkback will be. It counts for more if you will. The better quality linkbacks you achieve, the more ranking power your pages will have. On the same hand, the higher quality your linkbacks are, the less you may need to rank better in the search engines.
Just a few things to keep in mind when your looking for links.

Does it still hold true that site relalated backlinks are better than non-site-related backlinks?

I think any back link is good, unless of course it comes from a “bad” website.
Of course links come in with different levels of power. I honestly believe the power is higher in popular sites, such as high PR sites. I’ve proven that links even from unrelated web pages can beat related backlinks given enough popularity.
I’ve actually seen much more movement in the SERPs with the right non-related back links.
Just from my experience. Results may vary.
